Coach Dave Weimers has been on a grueling schedule since accepting the defensive coordinator position at Pittsburg State last week. Hot the recruiting trail already; we were able to talk with Coach Weimers for a few minutes by phone while he was in a Texas airport. The conversation was short but he was very passionate as well as insightful. We appreciate him spending time with us in such a busy time for him and the football program.
TK: Your feelings and thoughts on coming back to PSU after 14 years.
DW: “I’m really excited about coming to Pitt State. We were in a good place in Texas and we really liked it a lot but when to opportunity opened up to come coach at a place like Pitt State it was really a no brainier for my family and I! It’s a good fit for me, I have been around the block a few times, and I’ve served as coordinator on both sides of the ball as well as a head coach so I think I can be a good asset to the program.
TK: Tell me about what we can expect to see from your defenses scheme wise.
DW: I have had to run a lot of different looks on defense over the years. At this level you have to adapt to the personnel you have. We will look at that in a few weeks, right now we are focused on getting out and finding the best players we can get. The coaches seemed to like the defensive changes made last season but we will make a decision after we have a chance to evaluate the personnel, and who knows we my change it back to the old way. It’s hard to say because I have had no time or opportunity to look at last seasons defense.
TK: By not knowing what scheme you will be running, how does that affect the type of player you recruit.
DW: At the division 2 level you simply get the best players you can get! You get them in your program then make the best of their talents once they are there. It would be great to recruit specific athletes for certain positions in a specific defense but at this level that’s not really an option. You get the best kids you can find and you have to be flexible with what you do.
TK: What is the biggest difference between the MIAA and the Lone Star Conference?
DW: I’ve been asked that question about a hundred times. Both conferences have really good players and great coaching but the MIAA seems to have the upper hand for some reason. I guess the biggest difference in the two is the recruiting philosophies. The Lone Star relights more on junior college kids and drop down transfers were as the MIAA recruits more high school kids and keeps them around for four or five years. I think it’s the continuity from working with each other for a number of years that gives the MIAA the advantage.
TK: With your connection with Texas junior colleges and a defense here at Pitt with some immediate holes to fill can we expect some JC transfer to come to Pittsburg in the coming months?
DW: We are defiantly looking and I’m doing some recruiting through the state as I make my way to Kansas. In recruiting you explore all you resources and that includes my Texas JuCo connections as well as many more. Sometimes a transfer is the answer and sometime he is not. We will make the best decisions based on the kids we can get. It’s hard enough to get the kids you want but even harder to convince them to leave the state of Texas. We will look everywhere to find the best players possible willing to play for us.
