October 4th , 2008 was an evening the Gorillas football team and fans would like to forget……………………..Sorry I’m back now, I had to thrown down a few good belts of smooth Kentucky Whiskey before I could continue to write about that night. AHH, ok here it goes.
The Gorilla defense forced a punt on the Bearcats first offensive possession. On the three following possessions by Northwest the Gorillas forced third down and long situations on each drive. Unable to make the drive killing stop the Bearcats turn the drives into three scores and built a 21-0 lead. The offense could not get out of its own way in the first quarter. Northwest’s defense had the Gorillas bottled up for negative total yards on their first two possessions. The Gorillas did score with under two minutes in the half to cut the Bearcat lead to 21-7 at intermission. Read the rest of this entry »

When Nebraska Omaha came to town a few short weeks ago many believed the two opponents were playing for a post season playoff birth. In what turned out to be a great victory for the Gorillas turned out to be some what anticlimactic as far as the playoff implications. Few expected the Mavericks to still be playing the second weekend in November, but here they are.
In a regional race in which few teams could earn vital victories to secure a playoff bid the Mavericks did. They won their final three games after limping out of Pittsburg, good enough to earn the sixth place regional ranking, the final playoff spot. Read the rest of this entry »

Last season Washburn lost a close hard fought football game with Northwest Missouri the week before the Gorillas came to Topeka. Last season after the NW loss the Ichabods fell out of the top ten in the regional rankings. Last year the Ichabods didn’t let any of the preceding to effect them and beat the Gorillas 35-28. After a little help from teams above them falling in the rankings they found themselves in the NCAA DII playoffs.
Did I mention, or really need to mention that the loss knocked the Gorillas out of post season contention in what senior offensive lineman Travis Greer call his most embarrassing game as a Gorilla. “We have been blown out by Northwest a few times” Greer explains “but we should have never lost that game” (Washburn in Topeka last season) Read the rest of this entry »
