Player of the Week
Teamkong

There is no substitute for speed.  Speed Kills.  You cannot coach speed.

But you can recruit speed!

This years team is much faster than recent Gorilla teams.  In fact this might be the fastest Pitt State team many of us have ever seen.  Both offensively and defensively.  This team has speed (and depth with speed) at virtually every position.

So, with this in mind, this weeks Teamkong Player of the Week just happens to be the player with the most speed on the team.  He better be fast, because at 5’7”, 150 pounds he won’t run over many tacklers.  Jermaine Carpenter, the Junior wide receiver from Waco, Texas runs the 40 yard dash in a blazing  4.31 seconds.

Jermaine has made a huge impact on the Pitt State offense this year.  He has caught fourteen passed for 399 yards and 5 touchdowns.  He has also been a threat on special teams as a kick returner.

This week his performance against the Rolla Miners was tremendous, considering he only played the first half, because the Gorillas led 56-0 at halftime.  Carpenter had 4 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.  This marks his third consecutive game to have over 100 yards receiving, and he is the first receiver in school history to accomplish this feat.

Jermaine is not the only Gorilla getting in on the receiving action.  Against Rolla nine different receivers caught passes.  For the season sixteen different Gorillas have caught passes.  Pitt State is still solid rushing the football at 272 yards per game, but the Gorillas are passing for an average of 232 yards per game.   This balance is a joy to Gorilla fans everywhere, and something which has made the other members of the MIAA take notice.

Imagine.  Pitt State running the “toss-sweep” as a base play in the I formation, and attempting more than twenty passes a game.

This season is going to continue to be a fun one!
